About rsync

"rsync is a file transfer program for Unix systems which provides a very fast method for bringing remote files into sync."

rsync for backups

rsync is ideal for copying backups from one server to another, because each time you run it only the parts that have changed will be uploaded.

This suits the way that most backups work where frequently a local backup might contain a lot of data, but only small parts of that data will change each day.

Most of the existing Unix and Linux backup software supports the rsync protocol, and command-line tool, for securely and efficiently uploading backups.
